Document Purpose

This document outlines the general guidelines for creating new components and adding them to Waterloo Reality Labs’ Altium 365 component library. Please follow all of guidelines below, as a clean, organized, and concise component library will serve you and other team members well!

Properties

Name/Design Item ID

Generally, leave the DigiKey part name or Manufacturer Part Number as the name of the part.

Designator

Specific letters (like U, R, C, etc.) are used as a reference designators to give a specific reference to a component in your schematic. “U” is specifically used for integrated circuits. You can find the appropriate reference designator for all types of components here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reference_designator

We leave a “?” instead of manually numbering the component, as Altium has a function to automatically number all of your components at the end of your design phase.

Parameters

In the parameter section, you will want to leave common, important part characteristics. For a resistor, that should look like:

This makes it easy to have relevant parameters visible on the schematic. That would look something like this:

Common relevant parameters can be easily made visible by clicking the eye icon on the parameter.
